Camp Dellwood Day #3
June 20, 2012-We arrived at camp, participated in the flag ceremony and then we spent the morning working on our Juliette Lowe 100 Years of Girl Scouts Patch. We started out learning about trail signs and learning how to use rocks and sticks to make directional signs on trails. The girls then took time and made some of the signs with small groups.
The 2nd station we went to was 100 years of Girl Scouting. We learned about the many things that girls did as Girl Scout throughout the years! There were large boards in one of the rooms at the Program Center and on them were Girl Scouts of the 1910's- through present time. It was very interesting and informative to read about how the scouts started and the many different things they have been a part of over the years! I have decided that we need to hit Savannah, Georgia one of these days! Lots of Girl Scout history there. The girls answered questions about this station with a buddy.
After that station, we went outside to learn how to tie knots. The girls learned how to tie square knots and one other kind of knot that I can't remember the name of.
Lunch time! Being at Dellwood always makes a girl hungry, so we headed to the lodge for food.
After lunch was a much needed swim. It was so hot this week. The highs were in the 90's most of the week. The pool was a welcome sight. After pool was something new! Outdoor cooking! We don't usually do outdoor cooking and it looked so interesting as we had watched other girls cook during the day.
The girls started out making pancakes on a vagabond stove. This is a large can that has the bottom cut out of it and is vented at the top. Inside of the large can is a small can filled with cardboard dipped in wax. This was the heat source. The cardboard was set on fire and the large can was set on top. The girls got to make pancakes on top of the large cans. The helpers sprayed it and poured the pancake batter and the girls got to flip the pancakes. They thought this was very cool! They got to eat them with yummy syrup! Sarah's burned, so Mommy made one and Sarah got to eat that one!
Then the girls got to see a mess kit and hear about all the different things a mess kit could be used for. The mess kit reminded me of Jenny's mess kit she had in Girl Scouts. We then headed to our next station, donut frying. The girls were able to make a donut by taking a Pillsbury biscuit and putting it into a pot of oil that was cooking over a fire. Well, the grownups put it in, but they got to poke the hole in the donut. They also got to see a stove made out of a box wrapped in aluminum foil. The box was used to bake brownies. Hot coals were placed inside the oven and then it was ready to bake. I had seen nothing like it. So cool!
We rushed out of there and headed to flag. We had flag duty Wednesday. Sarah had a speaking part and did very well. Grace helped to carry the flag out after we retired the colors. Our unit did a great job!
Well, we are on the bus and almost home on Friday night. I will blog later about the rest of the week. I'm now looking forward to a shower, beverage, and a bed! The girls both did really well. Grace was pretty tired around noon and wasn't a very happy camper, however, at the end of the day, she said she didn't want to leave and she wanted to live at Dellwood. Glad she enjoyed it. Thursday and Friday will be coming soon!

Girl Scout Camp Day #2
So we are actually heading out for Wednesday, Day #3 of camp. But I thought I should get Day #2 written down while it is still fresh in my mind! Day #2 wasn't nearly as scripted for us as Day #1 was. We only had pool, lunch, and hopping on our schedule. We started out our morning at the flag as usual and then we attempted to teach the girls about signaling and morse code. It was interesting. Just not sure really how much the girls learned. They used flags to show dots and dashes. Left is dash, right is dot, center is end of the letter. I think it would be very hard to actually send a long message that way. I'm thankful for texting and emailing.
After that we swam. It was a tad bit chilly at first, but I got in to encourage Sarah to swim. She thought it was too cold. Grace got in and swam with her swim buddy Ava, but Sarah sat on the edge whining about how cold the water was. I reminded her that when we were in Oakes, ND the water was about 13 degrees colder at 69 degrees, she could handle 82 degrees. Eventually, she got in. But she wasn't happy about it. I managed to go off of the diving board and even dove a couple of times. After swimming we changed and headed to the Lodge to finish up some game requirements for the patch we are earning this week. The girls played ring toss relay and upset the fruit basket (a version of musical chairs).
Then, lunch time! Again, the kids lunch was so-so. PB and J for the kids, which Sarah said was too dry. We hopped again and Sarah and Grace both grabbed rags and wiped down tables and picked up trash. Of course there was some whining, but the Lodge looked great when we were done!
We practiced for the flag ceremony for Wednesday afternoon. Grace will be carrying the flag and Sarah has a speaking part. She says, "Girl Scouts, please join us in Taps." She uses her big sister voice and does a great job!
We headed back to Pinewood and proceeded to learn about cleaning the latrine. I will have to admit, I like plumbing. I like functioning toilets. I am not fond of bugs or spiders. I get why some of the girls and aides didn't want to clean the latrine. YUCK! But we got it done! Grace put her fingers over her ears, but after I gave her a look, she walked up to the front and watched the rest of it. She was very good after that.
Next, BUGS and Lanyards!!!
So we split into three groups and one group played buggy bingo with me and Wendy "Crafty." She and I took turns taking pics of our girls at the other stations as well. The other stations were lanyards, which our girls loved and the final station, bug catching. I was shocked to see both Sarah and Grace running around to catch bugs. Sarah caught a daddy-long-leg! Wow! Brave! Mommy was never that brave! Grace was spending a lot of time running from the bugs, but then, I saw her and she was looking under the platform tent trying to get bugs. She finally caught a little ant and was so proud of herself! She even let the ant crawl over her. I think both girls enjoyed making the lanyards and I know they loved finding the bugs! Fun stuff!!! We headed to flag and headed home. Another fun and busy day!

Girl Scout Camp
Sarah, Justin and I headed out of the house at 7:00am on Monday morning. Sarah and I were boarding a bus at 7:30am at Hawthorne Elementary and Justin was going to be taking part in a week of his preschool camp. Sarah and I were heading to Camp Dellwood on the westside of Indianapolis. We took part in camp last year for the first time and had a ball and decided that we should try it again. Jackson decided not to join us this year. He participated last year as a Tagalong. But instead, this year, Jackson is going to Vacation Bible School with his buddy Joe.
We got Justin dropped off and headed over to Hawthorne and jumped onto the bus. We were heading to Camp Dellwood!
When we arrived we picked up Grace. She was already at camp ready to roll. We began walking down to the flag pole for the morning flag ceremony. I was very excited to see that 3 other little girls who were in our Daisy unit last year were also in Pinewood, our Brownie unit. I was also thrilled that I was working with the same leader, "Berley" who I worked with last year. She is excellent at leading girls at camp. We started out with the flag ceremony and after that ventured down to Pinewood, out unit which we will make our "home" this week. There are about 10 tents with 4 cots in each tent. They are platform tents with canvas coverings. I opened them up and they were also very hot and covered with lovely daddy-long-legs! My favorite!
After exploring the tents and running around the area, we lined up and headed up to crafts at the Program Center. One thing is for sure, you need your walking shoes at Camp Dellwood. We do a LOT of walking!

Heading Home from North Dakota
Sunday, June 3rd we got up and got ready and waited for Jessy and Nate to get there with their girls. Peyton is 3 and Bryn is 3 months old. We enjoyed visiting with them until about 2. Julie and Diane brought lasagna from Aberdeen and we had a delicious lunch. Sarah loved holding Bryn and she and I played with Peyton. She is such a sweet little girl! I was so happy to be able to finally make a reconnection with Jessy. It has been 7 years since we have seen the girls. I was pregnant with Sarah the last time. Since then 10 babies have been born between the 4 of us! So we have been keeping busy with new babies and busy children. It was very good to see their family and meet Nate and the girls. Everyone else also enjoyed visiting with Jessy and her family as well!
Later that afternoon, when Jessy's family left, I put Justin to bed and took the kids to the park and to get ice cream. Sunday night we enjoyed burgers on the grill, drives on Nick's moped, and headed to bed.
Monday, June 4th, we drove into Aberdeen, South Dakota. We loved visiting Wylie Park, South Dakota. Storybook Land was a wonderful treat for the kids. They rode a balloon ride, carousel, and a train that went through the park. We enjoyed seeing some buffalo, llamas, and farm animals. The kids enjoyed walking the Yellow Brick Road and seeing the path that Dorothy took. Lunch time came and we met Julie, Diane, Jackie, Jerry, and Esther for lunch. Jeff spent the morning with us at Wylie Park. We ate at Perkins and the kids were really well-behaved. After Perkins we visited Julie and Diane's new home that was still under construction, then headed back to their house.
The rest of the afternoon was spent at Fast Care for Jackson's ear and then we ate at a Mexican restaurant where Jon pranked Julie. He told the staff that it was her birthday! She and Jon both rolled with laughter! The restaurant was across the street from the train tracks and Diane took both Jackson and Justin out to see the trains. They were in heaven!
After dinner we zipped back to Wylie park to enjoy a little more time at the park then we headed back to Oakes, carefully watching for deer along the way. We saw 3 deer, but managed to get home without hitting any, thankfully!
Tuesday, June 5th, we spent packing up. We enjoyed a trip to the car wash to get all of the bugs off of the car and Jackie took Sarah and Jackson on a trip to the park. She called and said there were kids swimming so we suited up and headed to the pool. There we were greeted by 69 degree water temperatures. It was miserable. Despite the cold water, Justin decided he wanted to go down the large curvy slide multiple times, much to mommy's chagrin. It was FREEZING!!! We only stayed poolside for about 35 minutes then we played on the playground and waited for Jon to pick us up. He had spent the morning mowing and decided to treat himself to a drink at the Legion. Dinner was a yummy meatball casserole that Esther had made. We worked on leftovers and finished packing up the trucks. Bedtime came early for Justin, Mr. No Nap. The other kids played, bathed and headed to bed as well. Jon, Jeff, Esther, Jackie, and I headed to the Legion for out last hurrah. I enjoyed a Malibu and Pineapple and relaxing before our long trip out.
Now, it is June 6th and we are just a few miles out of St. Cloud, Minnesota. The kids have settled down a bit. We will be stopping for gas soon. We haven't decided if wr are going to stay the night somewhere or make the trip in one day. We had a great trip! Looking forward to our next trip to the Dakotas!

Certainly not in the plans! We are headed to the urgent care in Aberdeen, SD for Jackson's ears. He asked if water would come pouring out when the doctor looked at his ears. We'll see! He has been laying his ear onto his shoulder and saying it hurts. But no fever, no tears. So we are heading in to make sure Jackson's ear doesn't explode, as he asked! :)

Subject: The Dells!
No we aren't staying at the Wisconsin Dells but we have made it to this point in our trip. The two big water parks at the Dells are Great Wolf Lodge and Kalahari, both of these resorts here are about 10 times the size they are in Sandusky! That is only my guess as we drove by in the dark, just before 2:00am. The drive has covered over 400 miles in 6 hours so far. Pretty good speed! Our drive was very, very wet, but it isn't raining anymore. Our outside temperature guage reads 48 degrees. It was chilly when we got out to stretch. Now we are getting ready to head out on our way to Oakes! The kids have been OK, but a bit out of control at the beginning of the trip. Now, Sarah is awake and watching a movie and we are on the way!
