While driving today we drove past signs for the Petrified National Forest. I asked if we could stop and Jon obliged. The kids did their customary "Noooooo" and then proceeded to have a good time.
We bought a National Parks Pass since we are going to Grand Canyon, White Sands and Carlsbad. The $80 pass will save us some money in the long run. Not a ton but $10-15 for now at least. Plus this park was a bonus we hadn't anticipated driving into!
So we drove into the Petrified National Forest around 9:45am and stayed until about 12:45pm. Our drive today was only 3 hours so it was easier to justify the stop today. Yesterday I wanted to stop at Petroglyph National Monument but that would've entailed at least an hour walk and on an 8 hour driving day it would not have been good.
We saw lots of wonderful rock formations, the Painted Desert, the Crystal Forest, and other very interesting things like the ruins of old civilizations. It reminded me of my Anthropology class in college because we learned about the Hopi, Zuni, and Kachina people and these people all live or lived in this area. Pictures don't do it justice. It was amazing and beautiful.
Oh and on a side note...I drove the motorhome for a VERY short time while going through the park. I am not very good at it and need to drive it through vacant parking lots with Jon only and no children so I can become more comfortable with it. I didn't wreck it though!
We made it to Williams, AZ by 3:00 and got to enjoy the pool and make dinner! Excited for the train trip to the Canyon tomorrow!!
